Australia’s Next Top Model 5: Episode 5

Previously: Clare’s idea of hell was the catwalk challenge, at 2 AM, in a Sydney fruit market. Mikarla failed, and there was even more drama. Eloise and Mikarla both got the chop. Back at the Elimination Warehouse, we see Cassi pleading Mikarla’s case and Adele says that Cassi was affected because she knows she hasn’t been trying as much and Mikarla tried hard-so it made her feel like she didn’t deserve to be there. Off to the side, the girls are in groups as she is crying alone, and Clare wonders if the wanting to go home is sympathy. Eh, I think it’s more guilt. Cassi doesn’t have to try and she runs circles around the other girls. Cassi goes upstairs and says it’s not fair because she produces good photos. Um…again. She is effortless at producing good photos, and it doesn’t matter how hard you try, it matters that you take a good picture. Clare continues to say that if she wants to leave, she should just go. In a waiting area, Franky and Adele question her about staying, and Lola doesn’t care-and probably would prefer it-if Cassi left. Back at the house, she is convinced to stay by her (apparently much older) boyfriend. The next morning, Madison describes them as waking up, going downstairs…and hearing farm noises! The Sarah mail is surrounded by plastic farm toys, with pictures of the girls on the heads of the animals. Lola is the donkey (snort), Franky is the sheep (heh), and Maddy is the cow “which was kind of funny”. Laura gets the Sarah Mail, which says: “Change, adjust, adapt. Try it at this week’s photo shoot-today” The girls are shocked that the photo shoot is today, and Clare says they’re going to be cows. Franky says that maybe they have to pose with a farm animal, while Lola says that they may have to BE the animals. She then does her animal imitation, and it ain’t pretty. Clare says that she doesn’t think any of them could have guessed what was truly in store…as they pull up to a farm. Clare says that many of the girls loved all the horses and everything, but she apparently isn’t a horse person. Lola, being the best tour guide she can be, notes they are at the Kindifarm, which is “baby animals! Cute!”-and they walk up and see Sarah. She says that they are shaking things up, and they are starting the week with the photoshoot. She is excited because she’s brought in THE ABSOLUTE BEST! Their photographer, Justin, is based out of England and is a former photojournalist who has photographed the Queen Mum, among others, and their stylist is Phillip, who has worked with Megan Gale. Phillip says today’s shoot is artistic photos-”very Italian Vogue”. He then says they will be wearing animal costumes. Sarah says the obvious: “when he says Italian Vogue, he means Italian Vogue” so she wants to see a different style of look for the girls. This is one key difference from the American version and the Aussie-Sarah is actually at more events than elimination! Shocker. Lola turns up the sarc meter yet again by saying they’ll “do something different…work some crazy makeup here and there, in the middle of a little farm. Sweet!”. Phillip wants black under the eyes, almost bags, and Tahnee wonders if he is for real with all the crazy patches and smudges going on. Maddy notes that Tahnee has this “crazy red thing going across her face”, as Franky gets into the chicken suit. She wonders what animal she is and Phillip says “a bird…a very ugly bird”. As Adele is getting into the horse/donkey outfit, Phillip is bitching about the makeup and says that it has to be redone for one of the girls. He then asks Lola what those feet are and she says “Gorilla feet” but he says “Transgendered feet”. OUCH. He asks her if her feet fit in the shoes, and she says no, and then says that she just squeezes her feet in. He then wishes her luck (very sarcastically) and Lola feels “like slapping the bastard”. Cassi is in some sort of outfit with ears and Phillip wants her ears to stick out-Cassi just thinks he’s mentally insane and had an anger problem 10 times worse than hers (a step towards recovery: admitting you have a problem). The girls get positioned and Maddy says that it was a group shot, so they had to huddle together amongst the hay bales with a horse in the background. Lola is handed a lamb, Adele gets a bunny, Maddy gets a lamb-and Franky gets a squealing baby pig. She wishes she had the runt pig, but she got the fat one. Clare is balancing on the back, in a big leopard costume, and is given “a big, screaming, evil piglet” which squeals in Maddy’s ear. Cassi says it is difficult because she has no idea what to do, and the photographer says that the photo is going to look like shit and it will be her fault. Eventually they are forced to change out of those outfits and get on flannel shirts and work attire. They are back on the hay bales and the photographer says that his 8 year old daughter could hold a big for longer. After a few utterly shiteous group shots, Sarah comes in and tells the girls that they’ve been through enough for one day, and it was all a set-up to test their professionalism. Clare says it was annoying because they were all trying SO hard. The stylist says “You’d think I’d put you in those clothes? My God!” and they both apologize, saying they’re nice people. Then Sarah tells them they are headed directly to their challenge. They’re going to be modeling diamonds that night, “worth thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars”. Franky asks if they can have a shower first, and Maddy says that the lesson was all about professionalism and keeping cool in hard situations-and she thinks she achieved that. She needs to achieve covering her bra properly, however. After getting cleaned up, the girls are met by Pease and introduced to Nicola Cerrone, or as Clare calls him, “the diamond guy”. Nicola says that tonight, it’s all about styling and being confident to wear a beautiful piece of jewellery. Clare says that it’s going to be tough-then Pease says that they’re going to be put on ice sculptures. They have to have “icy sophistication”. Down to hair and makeup, where Pease says that this week is all about extreme challenges. He then leads girls back upstairs, and says that there is a “massive prize” that they all want to win. Clare is forced to lean on “a pillow with angel wings” which actually is a butterfly, and she has this insane collar. Maddy has a ton of coloured jewels, and she says it’s the first time she’s worn anything like that-she’d only seen her mum’s wedding ring, which was one diamond…”this was like, shitloads”. Cassi says it was unfair that Clare got the butterfly, but then again, she got something easier to work with. Mingling amongst the guests, Pease says that Clare fits the bill perfectly and Nicola loves her eyes. Pease says that Cassi was just a model out there, holding the ice, while Clare embodied the brief. Tahnee and Franky both have trouble with the block of ice, and they both have big necklaces. Lola and Adele are last, and Lola freezes the side of her face to the block but it gets massive approval. Adele’s strategy is to stare at a building straight ahead, even if someone walked in front of her. Pease says the last group really stepped it up, and I do agree. Carmela (the wife of Nicola) says that you can see an imprint in the ice from Lola’s ear, so she can tell they truly want this. To the surprise of nobody, Lola wins, and she says “Great! The ice burn on my arm paid off”. Her prize is a dinky little heart pendant, worth about $2000. Australian, mind you. Cassi isn’t that jealous, since she prefers yellow gold. “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, yes, but I like my gold”. They get back to the house, and there are suitcases for each of them along with a dirt-filled suitcase with Sarah Mail. It reads: “Pack your bags-it’s time to get earthy” They all wonder where they’re going, until Clare screams out “SOUTH AUSTRALIA!” and she is excited, since she is from there. Franky says that everyone is excited for the field trip. Everyone, except Cassi, who is wanting to leave. She calls her mum who says that leaving would be the most foolish thing she ever does, and Cassi doesn’t want to disappoint but tough luck, her mum already is. The next morning, they get to the Sydney airport and they all get on Virgin Blue. They’re all tired, but Franky says they just want to get to their destination. They’re practically dancing off the plane once they land in Adelaide, and then it’s a 6-hour road trip to the hotel. I dunno about y’all, I’m sick of the Snoop Dogg hoodie that Cassi wears. They pull up to the Prarie Hotel, and Lucky tells them that they have their own quarters. Laura says that the hotel has been licensed since 1876, which we didn’t have to know but thanks anyway. They get to their rooms, which are basically like dorm rooms, and Tahnee says that the under-18′s and over 18′s each have their own room, with a pair of “sexy underwear” on their bed with Sarah mail attached. Laura reads it, and it says: “Don’t get your knickers in a twist, but your next photo shoot could be very revealing”. Cassi proceeds to twirl hers around and yell that it’s going to be an “UNDERWEAR SHOOT!” Clare and Tahnee put them on their heads, and Clare says that “you can’t get them in a twist when they’re on your head”. Adele says they’re trying to figure out what it’s going to be, but they’re expecting the worst. The next morning, at 5 AM, is the photoshoot, which Laura says is beautiful because of the sand dunes and red dirt-but there’s two other things: wind, and flies. In most of the confessionals, the girls have had to swat the flies away. And well, Maddy says there’s already a ton of flies, as the rest of the girls proceed to accidentally swallow the flies. They meet up with Pease, and their photographer, Russell James, who apparently has done Top Model before but also has shot KK, Naomi, Tyra, and Halle. The kind of women who need no last names. Franky says that they all are starstruck, and they definitely want to impress him. Russell says that they need to complement the landscape, as they are in “Australia at its absolute best”. He needs them to learn the story when they’re told the story, and then emotionally deliver. The story starts out with them and a male model, which excited the tree-bark holding Lola. Basically it’s hot, they strip to lingerie, and they’re looking for water. As the girls head off to hair and makeup, Pease says that it is a test for all of them because “there are more flies than I knew existed”, it’s bloody hot, and it’s a challenge, because they’re trying to make a fashion shoot look good. Clare is up first and a bit worried as she has less time to think about what she wants to do, but she wants to be the dominant female. Her outfit consists of a black lacy thing and a high-waisted skirt-and Pease says there’s not much whimsical going on today. Then Russell asks Clare if she has an idea, and she wants to do something with the truck but isn’t quite sure about the lighting. Russell likes that Clare gave an idea, because he isn’t looking for her to be creative director but it gave a point of departure. She gets on the top of the truck, and Russell says that it will be a great day if everyone is like Clare. Laura is up next with a sheer white long-sleeved shirtdress over a black bra and thong, and she is told that she needs to look angry. She has a lot of trouble with her shoes though, and Russell says that she needs to realize that because she is voluptuous, she needs to learn her angles. Her story is that she gets mad that he didn’t fill up the petrol tank, but she slowly gets happier. She shoots on tires with the model, being sure not to have him outshine her, and Pease says that Laura said she was going to bring a lot of emotion-which never got brought. Adele is wearing a black bra and then a knee-length slip, and she is told to get on top of an oil drum. Russell says that when he first saw her, she seemed demure and he thought it wouldn’t be good-but she came with a lot of confidence and movement. Pease is very proud of her, saying that the real Adele came out, and that she even showed a sexier side. She then shoots with the model (and tons of flies) and she had a strong camera personality and was extremely professional, to boot. Maddy is up next, and she felt very lightheaded. She is having a problem with the flies, and Pease asks her “Spit or swallow?” She’s only 17, for goodness sake! Her outfit is a chartreuse long sweater with white bra showing, and well…she’s floundering. She locks onto a wrinkled-brow expression and it doesn’t work. The male model comes in and it isn’t much better-she’s like a puppet whose strings were cut. Lola has no problem sitting in the sand in her full-body slip, saying that if she stuck her face in ice she can stick her ass in sand. She gets high marks for professionalism, sitting in the hot sand and wearing the most covering garment, but she did it well. Her idea is him standing back, almost a “what gives?”, and her walking away in a sort of “forget you” gesture. Pease says she turned back time to week one, when she shot with the giant Oscar statuette. Franky has a high-waisted black panty with a white bra and black vest, and Russell saw that she looked strong just walking across the sand so she was just shot on the dune, very simple. Then she gets up on the hood of the truck and she nails it, yet again. Tahnee is next, and she knows that she was feeling some pressure after some not-so-great feedback. Her story is that she was sent to get a piece of rope to get him out of the mess, and she did but she isn’t too happy about it. She has another one of those teddy-things, and Pease says that the highlight is that she is a beautiful girl. His job, however, is to bring that something extra out of her-and it took awhile. Russell agrees, saying that she definitely holds back. Finally, it’s Cassi. She is given the “angry” brief, and she executes it to perfection in a white bustier, bra, and black bikini. She then gets on the hood of the truck and poses there, and then her idea is to have the male model pick her up which Russell approves of, saying that she was the first model who recognized that the male model could really add to the picture. The shots are great, although she does feel a bit bad for her boyfriend. She goes back to the tent, and it’s “game on”. Pease and Russell then talk with the girls one last time, and you can see two guys in a distance-the two guys that give Franky the Sarah Mail: “One has come along for the ride but must now head for the hills” Laura wouldn’t mind Cassi leaving, due to the changing her mind about leaving. They wonder if they are going to “have elimination, bush-style, or head back to Sydney”, as said by Clare. At dinner, Cassi announces that she is not going anywhere and the other girls are secretly mad, but she isn’t there to worry about what they are saying. Looks like it’s Bush-Style Elimination as they go to a shed, and Sarah tells them that this week was all about surprises and how professional they could be, and they all surpassed expectations. Same old prize packages, and Pease and Russell are the two guest judges this week. Figured it had to be Pease. Anywhoo, Lola is first and hers tells a great story. It’s one of the ones with the guy on the bed of the truck. Tahnee is next, and hers is an up-close shot that is deemed her best shot so far by Sarah. Pease says he’s been drilling it into Tahnee about her eyes needing to drill, and they did. Clare is next, and Sarah says it’s unrecognizable as she was selling lingerie but still kept it high fashion. Alex loves it and says it’s “expensive”. Maddy is next and Sarah says that she is photogenic, she likes the styling…but the frown is too much. Russell says he liked Maddy when she first walked up, saying that she was very striking, but it was same old, same old every time-but not meaning to knock her beauty. Franky is told that she needs to keep working on the “smacked-ass face” but the photo gets a “hubba bubba” from Charlotte (it’s one of the ones of her laying on the hood). Alex says that it looks scorching. Cassi is next, and is questioned about her attitude but she says she is back on board 100% and promises to work on her anger. Then the photo comes up, and it’s a fairly close-up of her on the hood, and Charlotte wants to cry it’s so good. Alex says it’s very editorial and she needs to keep her eyes on the prize. The girls aren’t exactly that thrilled, specifically Lola and Laura. Russell says that she is a bit mechanical in her approach, but if she figures out how to loosen up a bit, she will go far. Laura is next…and Sarah deems her photo to be a little bit cheesy. Alex says the head is great, not the body, which looks a little “cheesecake”. Russell says the expression has to be physical, through her whole body-there was no risk factor. Adele is the last one up, and her photo makes Alex very happy as it gives off “expensive sex”. Deliberation time! Charlotte says that this was a good shoot, as it gave her the chills. Adele is right up near the top this week, as it’s a whole new Adele. Cassi has a lot of elements that worry Charlotte about developing professionally into a model, but she keeps delivering. Russell says that she needs a big attitude adjustment or else he does not want to see her near the end as he sees people that are so good but end up being their own worst enemy. Maddy gets a lot of hate from both Pease and Alex (“Kill me now…kill me now”) but Sarah thinks it’s a good photo. Charlotte says that one day, she’s going to stand up and kill him so that he doesn’t say it anymore. Alex says that that one shot was pulled out of a hat, and everything was perfect but not the model. Clare is great and Pease says that it’s another level for her, while Russell agrees and says that she is way ahead of the other girls. Tahnee has a strong edge and Pease says that it is all about versatility. Charlotte says that Franky’s shot is her favourite of the series, as everything works so well, and Alex says she understands how not to make a shot look like soft porn. “Speaking of male magazine” as Sarah pulls out Laura’s shot, which screams “tacky male magazine”. Charlotte says that Laura should be happy if she goes home, “because she can pop that straight on her Facebook profile and get lots of hits”. Lola, meanwhile, is deemed a waste of a shot by Alex, as at first he liked it but after seeing all the others, not so much. Sarah says that they can clearly see who the frontrunners are, and who the back pack is. Clare is first, and they want to see more of the edgy strength as opposed to the etheral. Adele and Tahnee are next, followed by “the outback beauty” Cassi, who is told that she finally showed some professionalism and needs to step it up and prove she wants to be there. Franky is next, followed by Lola who is told to bring the strong, feminine woman back with her. Maddy and Laura are the bottom two. Maddy completely wasted the opportunity, while Laura’s body was not there and at this point, they need the entire package. However Laura gets another chance, as Maddy is sent back to the beach. She is disappointed to be leaving, but picks Clare to win. Next week: Fashion 101-and the girls fail miserably. Adele, Clare, and Tahnee all do the big Alex Perry show on the Queen Mary (alongside Alice Burdeu, among other models). The photoshoot, which is fashion on the rocks, has Cassi failing while one girl is told she has an amazing week.
